Virat Kohli is an Indian cricketer and one of the best batters of his generation. He is famous for chasing big totals in one day cricket, his intense fitness and his energy on the field.
Early life
He was born in Delhi on 5 November 1988 to Prem and Saroj Kohli. He joined the West Delhi Cricket Academy at the age of nine. His father died in December 2006 while Virat was in the middle of a Ranji Trophy match. He went back to the ground the next morning and finished his innings, a story that is still told often in Indian cricket.
International career
Kohli led India to the Under 19 World Cup title in 2008 and made his ODI debut later that year. He was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup at home. He became Test captain in 2014 and led India to its first Test series win in Australia in 2018 to 2019.
He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup. In 2024 he was player of the match in the T20 World Cup final and then retired from T20 internationals. In May 2025 he announced his retirement from Test cricket, keeping his focus on one day internationals.
IPL
He has played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru since 2008 and is the leading run scorer in IPL history. After seventeen seasons of near misses, RCB finally won the IPL in 2025.
Personal life
Kohli married actress Anushka Sharma in Italy in December 2017. They have a daughter and a son and keep their children away from cameras. He is known for a strict diet and training routine.
