Sachin Tendulkar is a former Indian batter and, for many fans, the greatest cricketer India has produced. He played international cricket for 24 years and holds most of the major batting records.
Early life
He was born in Mumbai on 24 April 1973. His father Ramesh was a Marathi novelist and professor. His elder brother Ajit took him to coach Ramakant Achrekar at Shivaji Park, and he moved to Sharadashram Vidyamandir to play more cricket.
Career
He made his Test debut in Karachi in 1989 at just 16, against a Pakistan attack with Imran Khan and Wasim Akram. Over the next two decades he became the face of Indian cricket. He scored the first double century in ODI history in 2010 and finally won the World Cup in 2011.
He finished with 15,921 Test runs and 18,426 ODI runs, both world records, and 100 international centuries. He retired after his 200th Test in Mumbai in November 2013.
After cricket
In 2014 he became the first sportsperson to get the Bharat Ratna. He served in the Rajya Sabha, mentored the Mumbai Indians and works on children’s health and education causes.
Personal life
He married pediatrician Anjali Mehta in 1995. Their children are Sara and Arjun. The family lives in Bandra, Mumbai.
