Dwayne Johnson is one of the few people who became a huge star twice. First he ruled professional wrestling as The Rock, then he turned that charm into a movie career that made him one of the most bankable actors in the world. Today he is also a producer and a businessman with brands that sell far beyond Hollywood.
Early life and football
Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. Wrestling runs deep in his family. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a well known wrestler, and his grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a wrestling star from Samoa. The family moved often, and Dwayne spent part of his childhood in Hawaii and New Zealand.
Football came first. He earned a scholarship to the University of Miami and was part of the Miami Hurricanes team that won the national championship in 1991. Injuries ended his hopes of reaching the NFL, and a short spell with the Calgary Stampeders in Canada did not work out either. So he turned to the family business.
The Rock in WWE
Johnson made his WWF debut in 1996 at Survivor Series under the name Rocky Maivia, a mix of his father’s and grandfather’s ring names. Fans did not warm to the smiling good guy at first, so he reinvented himself as the cocky, eyebrow raising “The Rock.” It worked. His catchphrases and promos made him one of the biggest names of the wrestling boom, and he won multiple world championships before moving to films.
Hollywood career
His first big screen role was in The Mummy Returns in 2001, followed by his first lead in The Scorpion King in 2002. For a few years he took on comedies and action films, then his career exploded in the 2010s. He joined the Fast and Furious series as agent Luke Hobbs in Fast Five, voiced the demigod Maui in Disney’s Moana, and led the hugely popular Jumanji films with Kevin Hart and Jack Black.
In 2025 he surprised critics with a serious role in The Smashing Machine, playing MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The film did not earn much at the box office, but his performance brought him a Golden Globe nomination. In July 2026 he returned as Maui in the live action Moana, and a new Jumanji film is set for December 2026.
Business empire
Johnson co founded Seven Bucks Productions with his former wife Dany Garcia. He also launched Teremana Tequila in 2020, the ZOA energy drink and the Project Rock line with Under Armour. In 2020 he and Garcia bought the XFL football league, which later merged into the UFL.
Personal life
Johnson married Dany Garcia in 1997, and they divorced in 2008 while staying close business partners. He married singer and songwriter Lauren Hashian in Hawaii in 2019. He has three daughters: Simone, who now wrestles in WWE, Jasmine and Tiana.
Why people love him
Beyond the muscles and the box office numbers, Johnson is known for his work ethic, early morning workouts and the way he talks openly about mental health. That mix of strength and honesty is a big part of why he still has one of the largest fan bases on the planet.
