Cillian Murphy is the rare movie star who never seems to chase fame. He avoids social media, rarely talks about his private life and picks roles that interest him rather than the biggest paycheck. That quiet approach led him to Peaky Blinders, a long run of Christopher Nolan films and, in 2024, the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Early life
Cillian Murphy was born on May 25, 1976, in Douglas, a suburb of Cork in Ireland. Both of his parents worked in education. As a teenager he loved music more than acting, and he played in a rock band called Sons of Mr. Green Genes. The band was even offered a record deal, which they turned down.
He started a law degree at University College Cork but did not finish it. A role in the stage play Disco Pigs in 1996 changed his path, and he decided to make acting his career.
Breakthrough
His international breakthrough came in 2002 with Danny Boyle’s zombie thriller 28 Days Later. Hollywood soon noticed him. In 2005 he played the villain Scarecrow in Batman Begins and a chilling role in Red Eye. A year later he starred in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Peaky Blinders
In 2013 he took the role that made him a household name: Tommy Shelby, the sharp and haunted leader of a Birmingham gang in Peaky Blinders. The show ran for six series until 2022 and built a huge global audience. He returned to the role in the film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which arrived in cinemas in March 2026 before streaming on Netflix.
Working with Christopher Nolan
Murphy has appeared in several Nolan films, including the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk. Their partnership peaked with Oppenheimer in 2023. His performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer won him the Academy Award, the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the SAG award for Best Actor. He became the first Irish born actor to win the Oscar for Best Actor.
Producing
He co runs the production company Big Things Films. Its first feature, Small Things Like These, in which he also starred, opened the Berlin Film Festival in 2024.
Personal life
Murphy married artist Yvonne McGuinness in 2004. They have two sons, Malachy and Carrick. After years in London, the family moved back to Dublin in 2015. He keeps his family life private and has never used social media.
