Shah Rukh Khan is an Indian actor and producer who has been one of the most popular film stars in the world for more than three decades. People call him SRK or King Khan, and his films are watched far beyond India, from Pakistan and the Gulf to the UK, Germany and the US.
Early life and education
He was born in New Delhi on 2 November 1965 to Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima. He grew up in Delhi, went to St. Columba’s School and earned a degree in economics from Hansraj College. He enrolled in a mass communication course at Jamia Millia Islamia but left to try acting. Both of his parents passed away before he became famous, something he has often spoken about in interviews.
Career
Khan started on television with Fauji and Circus in the late 1980s, then moved to Mumbai. His first film, Deewana (1992), was a hit. He surprised everyone by playing dark characters in Baazigar and Darr, and then became the face of romance with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Chak De! India and My Name Is Khan followed.
After a few quiet years, 2023 changed everything. Pathaan and Jawan both became record breaking hits, and Dunki did well too. In 2025 he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan, more than thirty years after his debut.
Business and wealth
Away from acting, he runs Red Chillies Entertainment, which makes films and visual effects, and co-owns the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, which has won the title three times. In 2025 the Hurun India Rich List estimated his wealth at more than one billion dollars, making him one of the richest actors in the world.
Personal life
He married Gauri Khan, a film producer and interior designer, in 1991. They have three children: Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Aryan has moved into directing and Suhana into acting. The family lives at Mannat in Bandra, Mumbai.
