Few actors have had a career as dramatic as Robert Downey Jr. He was a celebrated young talent, lost years to addiction, rebuilt his life and then became the face of the biggest film series in history as Iron Man. In 2024 he finally won an Oscar, and now he is heading back to Marvel in a very different role.

Robert John Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York City. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was an independent filmmaker, and his mother, Elsie Ann Ford, was an actress. Robert first appeared on screen at just five years old in his father’s film Pound in 1970. He grew up between New York and California, and he left high school to focus on acting.

Struggles and comeback
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Downey struggled with addiction, which led to arrests and time in prison. He has spoken openly about this period. He has been sober since 2003, and in 2015 the Governor of California granted him a pardon. During his recovery he won a Golden Globe for the TV series Ally McBeal and slowly rebuilt trust in Hollywood.
Iron Man and Marvel
In 2008 Marvel took a chance on him for Iron Man. The film was a hit and launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played Tony Stark across more than ten films, ending with Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The same year as the first Iron Man, he earned an Oscar nomination for his comedy role in Tropic Thunder. He also led the Sherlock Holmes films, winning a Golden Globe for the first one.
Oscar win
